For decades, ferries have been the principal link between the island of Crete and the mainland. This is still true today, with several companies offering services between Athens and the island's many ports.

Two ferry operators run a regular service between the Athens port of Piraeus and Chania Port at Souda, with ANEK Lines providing an overnight service and Hellenic Seaways offering a fast catamaran service.
